1911 45 Colt Slide Springfield Frame

I just got back from the gun store today and they had what looked to be a old 1911 possible WWII era. It was a Essex frame with a Colt slide on it with about 60% of the park finish still on it. I asked them about and was told that all they knew was that it was pretty old and that they wanted $500.

I have a very old m1911 that I recently inherited. The serial number is 78,2xx on the frame. The only other marking on the frame is a flaming bomb stamped above the magazine release.

There is not a government property stamp on it. It does not look like one was removed from it.The slide has the patent dates up to 1911 and Hartford Co., etc.It does not have a rampant colt stamp nor does it have an eagle head stamp. There are no proof marks on it.

The colt website serial number look up says that it is a 1914 manufactured m1911. But, every other serial number lookup website I've seen, says that the serial number is for a springfield armory manufactured m1911.

I called Colt, got transferred to the archive department, and left a message. No reply yet.Any ideas?Edited to add link to imgur album:. I finally heard back from the Colt Mfg archive department.

They say that it is not a colt, it is a Springfield Armory serial number. I called Springfield Armory and they requested that I send an email with pictures. Email sent and I am waiting to hear from them. The lack of markings on the frame and slide is frustrating. So far I can only positively identify the frame and the barrel. The markings on the barrel identify it as a Colt barrel manufactured some time during 1924 to 1943.Edit: I just read that the first Springfield Armory frames were very dificult to fit Colt slides on to when guns were rebuilt by armories or manufacturers. So, if this turns out to be a Colt slide on a Springfield frame, it might stay that way forever. A lot of material might have been removed from the slide or frame or both.

Perhaps too much which may prevent a Springfield slide from ever fitting the springfield frame again. All springfield armory 1911s had that stamp on the frame above the magazine release with no other factory proof marks. All colts were stamped in that area with colt factory proof marks / inspector marks then shipped to Springfield Armory. Springfield Armory may have stamped the flaming bomb Ordinance stamp on other manufacturers pistols when they accepted them.

This is how it was done to Springfield Armory 1911s made until 1917. Springfield Armory manufactured 1911s should have the exact same stamp on the frame and the slide.

Thus, what would be called an ordnance stamp on all other manufacturers 1911s, would be called a Springfield Armory manufacturers stamp because it is the only visible identifying stamp on the outside of frames built by Springfield Armory.Edit: words.
