But when I go to copy/paste the notes from the piano roll into patterns things break down. FLS allows me to paste all 4 channels into a single pattern but seemingly not just track 1 into a pattern separately etc.

I edited my original question and you may have missed it, but what I really wanted to know is if there is a function similar to Ableton where the piano roll is treated as a clip or object and can be copied and pasted as such without opening the piano roll and copying the actual notes themselves? I'm assuming this is not possible in FL since right clicking on the piano roll just brings up the piano roll window. In Ableton you can drag and copy midi data this way and it is really simple to do.The method you described works and I thank you for the information, it's just that it takes a few more steps than I'm used to. No big deal. All you have to do is activate the channel you want to copy from by clicking the little green oval light/button between the channel button and step sequencer then Ctrl-C - this activates the channel without opening the channel settings, then activate the channel you want to paste to (using the little green oval) and Ctrl-V. It copies and pastes the entire pattern in the piano roll (or step sequencer) without opening the piano roll.Want to copy/paste multiple of them? Do the same thing, but right click on the oval, to select multiple channels.
Then you can paste to multiple channels. This presumes though that the midi info is going to be pasted to channels that are in the same order as the ones copied from.
